Covid-19 cases in Delhi: Delhi: 5,506 fresh Covid cases, scramble for critical-care beds | Delhi News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: There are only 330 Covid ICU beds with ventilator available across Delhi. The number of Covid ICU beds without ventilator that are vacant is 715.
With Covid-19 cases surging fast, the demand for critical care beds has gone up multiple times and many patients are forced to run from one hospital to the other for admission — a scenario witnessed earlier in November last year when daily cases had crossed the 8,000 mark in the capital.
Officials claim a similar crisis is emerging again, though at much greater speed. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded more than 5,000 cases for the second consecutive day with 5,506 more persons testing positive for Covid-19.
The city had reported 5,100 fresh cases on Tuesday. The positivity rate jumped to 6.1% on Wednesday, from 4.93% the day before, according to the government health bulletin.
A total of 90,202 tests, including 52,477 RT-PCR tests and 37,724 rapid antigen tests, were conducted the previous day, the bulletin stated. Twenty more people died due to Covid-19, taking the death toll to 11,133.
“In February first week, Delhi was reporting around 140 cases daily. It seemed that the pandemic had slowed. But there has been an exponential rise in cases over the past few weeks leading to a crisis situation,” Dr Rommel Tickoo, associate director, internal medicine at Max Saket, said.
He added that strict adherence to Covid appropriate behaviour and creating micro-containment zones in areas where there was a cluster of cases is needed to limit disease spread.
Delhi has 8,700 Covid beds. Of them, 4,885 (56%) are occupied. The occupancy of Covid ICU beds with and without a ventilator stands at 66% and 55%, respectively. This is despite the fact that more than half of the Covid-19 patients — 10,048 out of 19,445 — are under home isolation in Delhi. “Many patients are coming from neighbouring states also,” a doctor said.
