Maharashtra: Muslim leaders want restrictions on prayers be relaxed in Ramzan | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Some clerics and community leaders have appealed to the Maharashtra government to relax restrictions on prayers at places of worship and allow people to pray with adherence to social distancing and guidelines issued by the government.
The holy month of Ramzan is beginning next week and community leaders who met public health minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday said that, like last year, this year too Muslims could be deprived of holding prayers, including the special tarawih namaz in the night, at mosques.
The night lockdown should be imposed from 10pm so that people can offer their night prayers and go home.
“Our demand is for all places of worship and we feel that devotees should be allowed to visit places of worship provided they follow all the guidelines about social distancing, use of masks and thermal temperature check and sanitisers,” said senior cleric Maulana Athar Ali who was part of the delegation which also included another senior cleric Maulana Khalid Ashraf, Mumbai Aman Committee chief Farid Shaikh and SP MLAs Abu Asim Azmi and Rais Shaikh.
Tope told the delegation that he would discuss the issue with CM Uddhav Thackeray and get back.
The trustees of iconic Sufi Shrines Haji Ali and Mahim dargahs have written to the city collector, seeking permission to open all places of worship and with 50% presence of devotees.
“The places of worship, including dargahs, were hardly hit due to lockdown last year. We assure that the social distancing measures will be strictly followed and we should be allowed to welcome devotees to at least 50% capacity,” said Mahim Dargah’s managing trustee and Haji Ali trustee Sohail Khandwani.
Meanwhile, Jama Masjid Bombay Trust has written a letter to the CM and governor appealing for permission to allow prayers at the mosques during the month of Ramzan.
